Degree of productivity

In the relatively short amount of time (2 months) that I’ve know Sonia, I’ve been impressed by her productivity and work ethic. Sonia is committed to her art and to this program.

Level of engagement

Sonia is engaged in her work. She has demonstrated to me that her art is her passion and that she truly wants to be an artist. She is committed to completing this program and to learning as much as she possibly can.

Ability to think and work independently

Sonia is very capable of thinking and working independently. Her ideas for her projects are very clear in her mind. She is self-motivated. If anything, it might be beneficial for her to think about how she could make use of and benefit from collaborations, gallery representation, grants, residencies, etc.

The student’s understanding of his/her work within a critical/art historical context

Sonia’s work is firmly based in her own personal history. She is eager to learn about ways that her work connects in a broader critical / art historical context and is dedicated to this research.

Also, please specifically address the following questions:

Do you believe the student is involved in 20 hours of studio work per week, which is required for full credit in the studio component of the program?

Yes. Sonia is putting in well beyond 20 hours of studio work per week.

What do you suggest the student should accomplish before the semester ends?

I have suggested to Sonia that she needs to focus the themes in her work. Her work is personal and autobiographical. I suggest that Sonia finish her main current project “Ithaka 12” by the end of the semester or before. I am encouraging Sonia to work towards communicating/translating her ideas on a more universal level. I would like her to think more about how she would present a cohesive body of work based on her current research. I hope Sonia will realize that her artistic voice is relevant on many levels, and that both she and her work can benefit greatly from giving more consideration to how the world as a whole can connect to her work. Sonia’s work is firmly based on her past. My advice to Sonia is that she utilize that knowledge and experience to explore ways to think about envisioning the possibilities of the future.

Do you consider the student’s investigation and accomplishment to be on the graduate level?

Yes. There is great depth in Sonia’s investigation: Personal, Spiritual, Political, and Social. She is driven by her process and by the realization of her ideas, which are certainly at the graduate level. Sonya shows passion for experimentation and coming up with her own ways to communicate her ideas. Sonia makes art for art’s sake. She’s working out her past in order to understand her present.
