Here are some ideas that we talked about from our critique:
Continue painting these narrative paintings about yourself, mixed with some portraits of family members. The way the family member portraits have flat backgrounds, and the placement of the person in the center is different than the way you have painted the more action-filled and narrative based paintings which feature yourself.
Some ideas to remember about painting: cool colors recede and warm colors advance in space. Changing the background color so it doesn't "match" the skin tone of the figures will help create depth and interest in the paintings.
I'm interested to see how the "box" paintings work out: cardboard boxes with the sides painted. One thing I think you ought to think about while you work on boxes, is about the nature of boxes. What is their function? To hold items, conceal, protect during shipping, serve as a container. They stack to create shapes, barriers, etc. They have four sides, which invites your viewer to circle the box and view your paintings plane by plane (the viewer will have to move if they want to find out what is painted on the other side.) How do all of these qualities inherent in boxes strengthen the ideas in your work? Just something to think about!
Thanks Sonia, see you next month! Keep up the good work
